5 most important factors to consider for hydraulic fittings

OEMs and fitting manufacturers are constantly finding new ways to stump us with different threads and new ways to seal them. Generally, however, when making hydraulic fitting connection choices today, there are several features to research and understand for your application. Kyri McDonough from the Hose Products Division at Parker Hannifin runs through the connections, attachment styles, and the five most important factors you need to consider for hydraulic fittings.

Convert your direct-acting solenoid valve to pneumatics

The PneuMagnetic actuator is a drop-in replacement for the OEM coil on an industrial direct-acting solenoid valve. This self-contained pneumatic-magnetic device provides the same powerful on/off magnetic field as the original coil. Valves converted to PneuMagnetic are operated by an inexpensive air pilot using a small-diameter, flexible pneumatic line. No electricity. No field wiring. No conduit. And no intrinsically safe IS barriers required.

Retain load on hydraulic power or pump failure

The AMLOK Hydraulic Series RCH Rod Clamp has been developed to provide power-off clamping of rods and shafts. The type RCH Rod Clamps are actuated by a spring/collet mechanism and unclamped by hydraulic pressure. These rod clamps are designed to clamp components after the motion has stopped and to hold the position securely as long as the forces do not exceed the table values. For braking and pneumatic applications, contact the factory.

Economical electric actuators

The EPZ Series of Industrial Electric Actuators is an economical solution for small-diameter ball valves and well suited for tight-space applications. The actuators are available in two sizes: the EPZ-6 and EPZ-15. The EPZ-6 has a torque output of 55 in.-lb/ 6 Nm, and the EPZ-15 features an output of 135 in.-lb/15 Nm. Both sizes are non-spring return with NEMA 4/4X enclosure, and have an ISO5211 F03/F05 mounting pattern. Other key features include: on/off jog control capabilities, aluminum alloy dry powder-coated housing, thermal-class F motor protection, and manual override including lock-out functionality. Typical applications or installations include but not limited to waste and water treatment, chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, irrigation/agriculture, marine or corrosive environments, aquatics, and water/theme parks.

More than 1,000 hydraulic macros

A new, comprehensive master data package for hydraulics now bridges the gap between fluid and mechanical design. More than 1,000 new hydraulic macros in Eplan Fluid software speed up and simplify interdisciplinary documentation. The advantages of a common set of control technology documentation for fluid and electrical engineering are well known; a look at hydraulics opens up even more potential. From the beginning, Eplan Fluid 2.0 offered users a comprehensive "fluid data package" containing more than 1,000 hydraulic macros. The combination of CAE functionality and the new macros provides unbeatable advantages for hydraulic designers, especially in mechanical engineering.

Pneumatic actuator approaches zero friction

Airpel Plus is a line of high-performance, low-friction air cylinder actuators. The benefit engineers derive from these low-friction levels is an enhanced ability to control ultra-precise movements, including high speeds and extremely short travel distances with clean, long-life pneumatic devices. The inert qualities and tight tolerances of the glass and graphite materials used in these actuators allow engineers to develop systems that will move, hold, or press accurately and with amazing repeatability.

Ultra-low pressure sensors

The LPSI/LPS2 Series offered by Servoflo Corporation consists of ultra-low differential pressure sensors measuring from 0.1 in. to 5 in. of water in various non-directional or bi-directional calibration ranges. Based on a MEMS thermo-anemometer, the LPSI/LPS2 Series infers differential pressure from a nano-liters per second gas flow through an integrated airflow channel. The on-chip circuitry provides analog amplification and temperature compensation to send an accurate linear output over a wide temperature range (±2.5% FS from 5°C to 55°C). The LSP1 comes in various ranges from 0.1 in. to 2 in. of water, while the LPS2 is available from ranges between 1 in. to 5 in. of water. Standard input voltage is 5 VDC, and a 3V model is also available.

Maximize material throughput and increase production

piFLOWi is an easy-to-use vacuum conveying system that doesn’t compromise on technical performance. The piFLOWi design makes it possible to double the conveying capacity for many materials, compared to traditional conveyors. The full opening gives an instant discharge for vastly increased material throughput. Its design makes it very suitable for integration in general industrial applications. Like all other Piab conveying machines, piFLOWi is ATEX dust classified. The system uses COAX cartridges that are smaller, more efficient, and more reliable than conventional ejectors.

TRW introduces innovative roof airbag technology for cars

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. recently unveiled its new "bag-in-roof" airbag system that replaces passenger airbags typically mounted in the instrument panel. The company says the new airbag can help to mitigate passenger injuries and can allow for improved interior design aesthetics, ergonomics, and functionality while saving space in the instrument panel.

Dirk Schultz, engineering director for TRW's Inflatable Restraint Systems, says: "Occupant safety systems are becoming increasingly versatile. With the increasing focus on reducing road fatalities, we need to develop new ways to enhance the protection of occupants – one area of focus is the design and configuration of airbags. TRW's new roof airbag system is a unique development, and studies have shown that such a technology provides enhanced styling flexibility for future vehicle interiors in combination with excellent restraint performance."

In addition, this new design concept enhances development efficiency by eliminating the need to package a passenger airbag in the instrument panel, TRW's bag-in-roof design can significantly reduce the development costs of the dashboard, as there is no need to develop a specific "door" that opens with the airbag deployment. It is also functionally compatible with a wide range of vehicle architectures.

The airbag unit comprises a cushion and a gas generator that supplies the gas to the cushion in the event of an impact. The product offers easy assembly with opportunities for standardization, as some of the components are common to all applications.

TRW has undertaken pre-development work for the bag-in-roof technology for several years, and over the previous two years in close collaboration with a major European vehicle manufacturer. This has resulted in the award of a significant production contract with the vehicle manufacturer.
